PIPISTREL VELIS ELECTRO

Royal NLR – Netherlands Aerospace Centre, will be participating in the DCCA’s event for sustainable aviation “A Flight to the Future” in Aruba. For this occasion, NLR’s Pipistrel Velis Electro electric research aircraft will perform several e-flights. In fact, this will be the first flight of an electric airplane on Aruba. The Pipistrel Velis Electro is a 2-seater propeller training aircraft that is fully powered by an electromotor and can fly for a duration of 30 minutes, taking into account a 30 minutes reserve time.

Experience electric flight
During the event, NLR will perform several e-flights with the Pipistrel aircraft each day. Visitors and the public will get a unique opportunity to see and experience electric flying. The electric research aircraft of NLR will also be demonstrated in the hangar at the airport to the local community of the islands. NLR believes it is crucial to involve everyone in the journey to a sustainable aviation future. More information on the Community Involvement event will be shared soon.

Research of electric flight in the tropics
The e-flights in Aruba will give NLR a unique opportunity to collect data and study the behaviour of the electric plane in a tropical climate and the salty climate, and the effect these have on battery life, maintenance needs, etc.

Sustainable aviation
Royal NLR’s mission is to make aerospace more sustainable, safer, more efficient and more effective. We apply our knowledge, expertise and test facilities for innovative solutions and practical advice to strengthen the competitiveness of the business community and contribute to solutions for social issues. The Pipistrel Velis Electro (PH-NLX) is one of NLR’s research aircraft and is used to conduct research in electric aviation, on topics like battery life, maintenance and flight performance. NLR’s aim for climate-neutral aviation in 2025 is to transform this aircraft to a hydrogen powered aircraft.
